What is the full form of SC, ST & OBC?
The following is the full form of SC, ST, and OBC:
SC – Scheduled Castes
ST – Scheduled Tribes
OBC – Other Backward Classes
These are the groups of people in India who have been kept reserved by the constitution of India so that this group can get more facilities than unreserved categories of people. Some places are kept reserved for the people of these categories in government jobs and government schemes. There is a provision of reservation for these categories under Article 16 (4) of the Constitution.
Scheduled Castes
Before the country became independent, these people were known for doing dirty work, hence they were considered untouchables. They were very backward educationally, socially, and economically, so they have been given more reservation according to the constitution.
The term ‘Dalit’ is used for scheduled caste people, this is a Marathi language word and popularised by B. R. Ambedkar. This categories people were also known as ‘Harijan’ which means Man of God. According to the 2011 census, 19.7% of the total population of India belongs to the SC category.
Scheduled Tribes
ST are those people of India who live in forests or whose ancestors used to live in forests. People of this category are not considered to belong to any religion or caste, these are considered deprecated. They have their own dressing style, tradition, food, and culture. According to the 2011 census, 8.5% of the total population of India belongs to the ST category.
Other Backward Classes
In this category, the people of that caste come who are educationally and socially deprived therefore OBCs have also been described as a Socially and Educationally Backward Class (SEBC) in the Indian Constitution. According to the 2011 census, 43.1% of the total population of India belongs to the OBC category.
