What is the full form of HMT?

The term HMT stands for Hindustan Machine Tools Limited. It is a government-owned company that started in 1953 under the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises in India. Its headquarter is located in Bangalore city of Karnataka state of India. In beginning, the company was manufactured heavy machines, tools, and tractor parts and accessories. In earlier years, HMT was also most popular for their HMT wristwatch brand.

In earlier 2016, HMT closed to manufactures and to supplies of wristwatches, on the same year they also shut HMT Bearings and HMT Tractors due to lack of management and a large number of losses. Currently, HMT is active in manufacturing industrial machines and tools with 2500 active employees in 6 units which are located in Banglore, Kochi, Hyderabad, Pinjore, and Ajmer. Most of their manufacturing goes to the Defense and Government of India.

History

  • Hindustan Machine Tools Limited (HMT) was started on 7th February 1953 as a machine tool manufacturing company by the Government of India.
  • In the intervening years, HMT had expanded and started manufacturing watches, tractors, printing machinery, metal forming presses, die casting and plastic processing machinery, CNC systems, and bearings.
  • HMT Limited acquired Praga Tools Limited as one of its subsidiaries in 1988.
  • In the collaboration with Citizen Watch Co Ltd an Japanese watch manufacturing company HMT set their watch manufacturing unit in Bangalore in 1961.
  • In 1975, the watch factory in Bangalore was expanded and started to manufacture mainspring, hairspring, and shock absorber components.
  • HMT had set up units in Tumkur and Ranibagh to manufacture more watch components. Later the factory located in Tumkur was taken over by the Quartz company and continued the work of manufacturing their watches.
  • In September 2014, Government of India decided to shut down the extra HMT operations step by step.
  • In September 2016, Government of India closed HMT Watches Ltd, HMT Bearings, HMT Tractor, and HMT Chinar Watches Ltd due to the company was making losses for a long time.
