What is the full form of SSL?
The full form of SSL is Secure Sockets Layer. SSL provides security to your websites. There are about all hosting services which are providing free SSL with hosting. When you get SSL, HTTP in your domain converts into HTTPS. That is secure.

let me explain the function of SSL with an example. Suppose there are two different entities and they are doing data transfer with each other. If you want to transfer data securely, you need to use SSL.
You have a webserver and you want to transfer data with your client. SSL provides the security to transfer data from one to another. It happens similarly with web browsers and web servers.
Now you have an idea about the main function of SSL. Its main function is to provide security when while data transfer. SSL provides three types of security.
What is the position of SSL?
There are three types of layers Application layer, Secure sockets layer, and transport layer. SSL means the Secure sockets layer is between the Application layer and transport layer.
Working flow of SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)
Here is a send who wants to send the data to the receiver. That means your Application layer wants to send data to the receiver side. But It does not send data from the Application layer to the Transport layer. It firstly gives it to the Secure Sockets layer.
When the data comes to the Secure socket layer, it will encrypt the whole data by using some kind of encryption algorithm. After this process, SSL does an incredible thing, that is it attaches its header to the data (It means Secure Socket Layer header to the data). Now it generates a packet of data. After this whole process, it sends the packet to the receiver.
After receiving the data packet, the first action takes by the receiver is that remove the SSL header from the data packet. To read that data, now it decrypts the data packet by using a decryption algorithm. Once it totally decrypts, the original data comes out and received by the receiver’s Application layer.
This is the working flow of the Secure Socket Layer. We learn SSL does not work alone Application layer and the Transport layer also works with the Secure Socket layer. It all about the full form of SSL in the computer.
Types of security provided by SSL
There are three types of security provided by SSL certificate as follows –
- Integrity – When a sender sends data to anyone until it comes into the receiver’s hand till then there should be no undesigned modification and undesigned alteration in that particular data. Receive the receiver in the same intact position as the message was sent from the side of the sender. It means the integrity of your data is strong and SSL takes the responsibility for this.
- Authentication – There are two entities. Which communicated with each other for data transfer. It is also the job of SSL to check that the property is authenticated or not.
- Confidentiality – Here is a sender. Who sent the data to a receiver. So only that authorized user may get that data. An only authorized users can access this data right there. And no other means any third party could access it. It means your confidentiality is strong.
SSL Protocol stack
There are four protocols used by SSL. Each protocol has its own different function. Two of these four protocols are very very important protocols. We can call it the backbone protocol of SSL. The other two are not as important as those two protocols. But they come under SSL. There are also three extra things, you already know is HTTP, TCP, and IP. These all protocols come under the SSL Protocol stack.
- SSL Record protocol
- SSL Change-cipher spec protocol
- SSL handshake protocol
- SSL Alert protocol
SSL Handshake protocol – The connection of two entities who are going to transfer the data must be established. So SSL Handshake protocol works to make their connection properly established. Authentication of entities is also performed by SSL Handshake protocol.
SSL Record protocol – SSL Record protocol tries to provide the remaining two securities. Confidentiality by using some encryption algorithm. Integrity means your data remains intact until it reaches the receiver. This is the responsibility of the SSL Record protocol.
SSL Change-cipher spec protocol – This protocol consists of one single message. That message is of one byte. Ant that one byte consists of the value one. This message helps to convert the Pending stat to copied into the running stat or current stat.
SSL Alert protocol – All alert messages, warning messages, fatal error messages go through this protocol. If there is any fatal error message in your established connection, it must break your connections.
